Out Now: Old Races: Aftermath by CE Murphy

Margrit Knight has broken the long-held covenants of the Old Races. Ancient rivals are scattered, friendships are broken, and the dragons, djinn, selkies, vampires and gargoyles are beginning to step out of the shadows and into the light.

But the new world may not be what they expect. Dragonlord Janx faces more than he bargained for when human magic interferes with his own. Half-vampire Ursula Hopkins is only starting to understand what she may have unleashed by awakening her brethren, and Margrit Knight herself still has debts to pay after the death of a djinn…

Watch the aftermath unfold in these five new stories of the Old Races…

Note: To make the most of this one, you have to read the Negiotator Triology first.

Friday Bargains: A lot of mystery and Thriller

The Harlequin Set and other stories by Agatha Christie is available for 0.99 at Amazon ( This is a US only pre-order, it is released in august. And it is 9.99 at BN)

Map of Bones by James Rollins is free at Kindle and BN (This is US only.  And Sony is not included, so I cannot download it. )
But, I did discover that the omnibus of The Doomsday Key and The Last Oracle  is discounted to 2.99  at both BN and Sony, which means Amazon should have the same price.

Simon and Schuster offers a bundle of three Joy Fielding novels for a free at Amazon.

The Perfume of The Lady by Gaston Leroux is available for 1.35 at Booksonboard. It is unlikely to end up at Amazon, since it is published by Sterling Publishing which is owned by BN.
This the second book in the series, and I recommend that you read the first book before.  It is in Public Domain and can be found here

Open Road Media has a summer sale, with some interesting titles.
Kobo also offers an coupon code on Open Road mysteries.

Arcs!

I rarely request ARCs, since I have so many books to read anyway. But thanks to a combination of several factors I have ARCs this month. And I thought I would blog about them.

First out is The Grass King’s Concubine by Kari Sperring.   I have been waiting for this book ever since I heard her read from it at Eurocon in 2010.  And I am savoring it, reading 50-100 pages a day.   ( And yes, I’ll review it. I want more books in this world, and she has hinted that hinges on this book.)

Next is Dragon Justice by Laura Anne Gilman.   This was a reward in the Miles to Go Kickstarter. And… I am still waiting for it. sigh. Hopefully it shows up tomorrow.

To compensate that I requested an ARC of Silver Mine by Vivian Arend.  I requested the Arc on a whim, not really expecting to get one. *g* So I was pleasantly surprised when a copy showed up in my e-mail account.

The result of this is that…I have requested more ARCs at Netgalley.   I can understand why  reviewers use Netgalley. The giddy feeling of reading an book early is very nice :).  I don’t plan on using Netgalley often, though.

I am reading this one right now, and it is sooo good.

Libriomancer (Magic Ex Libris #1)

Isaac Vainio is a Libriomancer, a member of the secret organization founded five centuries ago by Johannes Gutenberg. Libriomancers are gifted with the ability to magically “reach” into books and draw forth objects. When Isaac is attacked by vampires that “leaked “from the pages of books into our world, he barely manages to escape. To his horror he discovers that vampires have been attacking other magic-users as well, and Gutenberg has been kidnapped.
With the help of a motorcycle-riding dryad who packs a pair of oak cudgels, Isaac finds himself hunting the unknown dark power that has been manipulating humans and vampires alike. And his search will uncover dangerous secrets about Libriomancy, Gutenberg, and the history of magic. . .

What books are you looking forward to read in August?

Book recommendation: Silver Mine by Vivian Arend

Life in isolation is the safest place for Chase Johnson, a crossbreed who doesn’t know which form he’ll assume next—cougar or wolf. Once a year, his unelected position as spokesman for the Yukon outcasts forces him to visit civilization. This time he runs across someone unexpected. She’s not his mate, but she pushes all the right buttons.

It’s taken years for Shelley Bradley to gather the courage to return to her home pack. In spite of being the lowest of the low—a shifter who can’t shift—she’s determined to make a place for herself as the Whitehorse locals’ new vet-slash-doctor.

There’s definite electricity between her and Chase, but sex with fellow shifters and the inherent mind games got old a long time ago. Ignoring him seems best. When he shows up at her office with a wound that won’t heal, she’s stuck—yet drawn to solve this medical mystery.

As they journey deep into outcast territory in search of answers, their powerful sexual attraction crumbles her resistance. But time is of the essence. If a cure can’t be found before his human and cougar succumb to his injury, he—and others like him—will die.

I read the first one, and felt meh, but the blurb is intriguing and I liked the excerpt that Vivian Arend posted awhile ago. So I’ll buy it.

Review: Giving Chase by Lauren Dane:

The Particulars: Contemporary Romance, Samhain, available in print and as e-book.
The source: Purchased at All romance
The Grade: A-
The Blurb:
Together they find a special love-can it survive the threat stalking her?

Some small towns grow really good looking men! This is the case with the four Chase brothers. The home grown hotties are on the wishlist of every single woman in town and Maggie Wright is no exception.

Maggie has finally had it with the men she’s been dating but a spilled plate of chili cheese fries drops Shane Chase right into her lap. The sheriff is hot stuff but was burned by a former fiancie and is quite happy to play the field.

After Shane’s skittishness sends him out the door, Maggie realizes that Kyle Chase has had his eye on her from the start. Now that Shane has messed up, Kyle has no intention of letting anything stop him from wooing her right into his bed.

Despite Maggie’s happiness and growing love with Kyle, a dark shadow threatens everything-she’s got a stalker and he’s not happy at all. In the end, Maggie will need her wits, strength and the love of her man to get her out alive.

The Review:
This was the first Lauren Dane book I read, after hearing a lot of people rave about her. I thought I reviewed it last year, but I forgot to write the review. So I am reviewing it now instead.
This story sucked me in from the start. Sometimes, I felt liked I was walking next to Maggie as she went on her first date with Alex ( who gave me the creeps by the way), I had to blink away tears when she decided to not go on any more dates. I wanted to punch Shane when he behaved like a jerk. But once she decided to date Kyle? Everything felt right. Not that it was easy. Nuh-uh. But I loved how supportive Kyle was, and how Maggie gradually gained her confidence and started to believe that she was worth to be happy, to have good man.
When it comes to the setting, it felt  believable.  A lot of that feeling stems from the careful details in the setting.  From the  Home coming week, and the way everyone in town shows up, to the way everyone supports their friend.  A lot of this  stems from the characters.  Maggies friends are down to earth, and generous. Which made Maggie’s mother and sister stand out. And not in a good way.

I wanted to claw their eyes out when I heard the poison their spewed.  I cheered for Maggie when she dared to stand up to them.

When it comes to the stalking part of the plot, I loved how it showed the difficulty the police has with stalkers, and how it often is viewed as a lesser crime.  Even though it isn’t.

The biggest problem I had was with the fact that Maggie first dated Shane, before she started to date Kyle. I can understand why from a story point, but it still bothers me a little bit.
Still, it was an great story, and I highly enjoyed it.
