Things I learned in 2012

Having a slight backlog of reviews help.
I hit a reading slump earlier this year, which affected my reviewing for a long time. If I had reviews I could edit and then schedule, it would have helped.
Be flexible
I try to post reviews 3 times a week, and something else at least two other days. But, sometimes life get in between ( or a hard drive crash).
Just because Blogger tells me a post hasn’t been viewed,  doesn’t mean it hasn’t been read.

Discovering that Blogger doesn’t  count views through RSS readers, unless you click on the link, made me much calmer.  Last year, I had a tendency to fret more over the number of visitors.
Sometimes, being small is good
I am happy with the size of my blog. Yes, it would be fun to have more followers, but it isn’t something I am desperate to have.
Reviewing is fun
Even if I for some reason stopped blogging, I wouldn’t stop reviewing. It is addicting to get notifications from Amazon that my reviews helped someone.

Out Now: Feral Magic by Robin D Owens

Click the cover to purchase it at Amazon

A blue moon rises, bringing with it magic and danger to a sleeping Denver.

Brandy Svensson mourns her lost soldier fiancee and struggles to move on. Her own near-death experience has brought her an odd “gift” – she has a telepathic connection with cats. She’s coping with life’s changes until the night she finds a lost jaguar cub, just the start of the greatest changes of all…

Dak, a warrior Pantherman, is alarmed when his baby nephew, the Chief of the klatch, vanishes. Dak must find the infant before his enemies do…or be branded a murderer and risk igniting warfare among the clans.

When the cub turns into a human baby, shock and confusion flood Brandy. And when a full-grown jaguar arrives to claim him, then transforms into a man, fascination sweeps through her. Dak’s protective instincts are triggered by this lovely woman, and the certainty that he’s followed by a killer.

Drawn together in their fight to protect the baby, Brandy and Dak confront the enemy and the final choice threatens. Will the feral magic they’ve discovered together save or doom them?

Ten Days of Yule: Anticipated 2013 releases

I have a bunch of books that I am waiting for in 2013, and but these are the books I am the most eager to read.  The links are if you want to pre-order them at Amazon.
Second Chance Cafe by Alison Kent
I loved her Love in Bloom, and Love Me Tender, and I cannot wait to read this one. Unfortunately it published by Amazon Montlake, so I’ll have to buy it from Amazon

Fixed by LA Kornetsky
This is the sequel to Collared, and November 2013 cannot come fast enough for me.
Heart of Briar and Soul of Fire by LA Gilman
This is Laura Anne Gilman’s next Urban Fantasy series, and the snippets she has posted makes me twitch with impatience to read.

Night Blade by JC Daniels
This is the sequel to Blade Song, and it is so good. I have it on pre-order, and I plan to request it when it is up on Netgalley.

Jar of Dreams by Liz Flaherty:
It is Liz Flaherty. Do I need to say anything more?

Mountain Echoes & Walker Paper 9 by CE Murphy
sob The last two Walker Papers. I hate that the series are ending, yet I cannot wait to read them.
Death and the Madwomen by Kari Sperring
This is the sequel to the Grass King’s Concubine, and I cannot wait to find out how the Brass City, and the Silver City, reacts to the Cadre and the Ferret sisters.

Ten Days of Yule Review: Christmas at Friday Harbour by Lisa Kleypas

The Particulars: Contemporary Romance, St Martin’s, available as e-book and in print
The Source: Purchased at Books On Board
The Grade: B-
The Blurb:

The last thing Mark Nolan needs is a six-year-old girl in his life. But he soon realizes that he will do everything he can to make her life whole again. His sister’s will gives him the instructions: There’s no other choice but you. Just start by loving her. The rest will follow.
SOMETIMES, IT TAKES A LITTLE MAGIC…
Maggie Collins doesn’t dare believe in love again, after losing her husband of one year. But she does believe in the magic of imagination. As the owner of a toy shop, she lives what she loves. And when she meets Holly Nolan, she sees a little girl in desperate need of a little magic.
…TO MAKE DREAMS COME TRUE
Three lonely people. Three lives at the crossroads. Three people who are about to discover that Christmas is the time of year when anything is possible, and when wishes have a way of finding the path home…

The Review:
I bought this when I discovered that it was about to be re-released with a new title and higher price. And I am glad I did.
The small town setting was believable. From how the shop owner supported each other, to how they lived in sync with the tourists that they depended on. It was also intresting follow Maggie as she interacted with Holly, and got her to open up.
I loved following Maggie and Mark’s relationship evolve from friendship to love. I could feel the attraction between them, but I appreciated that they took it slow. Both Maggie and Mark needed time to open their hearts. It was touching to follow Maggie’s realisition that she could love twice.
More than the romance, I loved the way Mark and Maggie got Holly to open up and start the long path of healing after her mother’s death. These three felt just right together.
The biggest problem I had with this book was that it at times felt almost superficial. That might be because it was surprisingly short for a novel.

Ten Days of Yule ARC review: All for you by Dana Marie Bell

The Particulars: Paranormal Romance, Carina Press, available as e-book

The Source: ARC from Netgalley
The Grade: B
The Blurb:

He’s kept his wings hidden from Abby in order not to frighten her, but as her stalker becomes bolder, Seth begins to suspect that a Shem has Abby in its sights…

As their flirtation escalates into full-blown passion, Seth is torn. Should he reveal his true
nature to the beautiful, trusting Abby? Will she accept him, wings and all, or will Ab
by
flee her guardian angel and fall prey to the sinister force that wishes her harm?
The Review:
When I saw this on Netgalley, I requested it on the spot. And I am glad I did.
This was a refreshing change from her Halle Shifters books. I cannot wait to read the second book in the series.
The world was intriguing, and sucked me in. I loved the different abilities that each Nephilim had, and how they couldn’t do everything. The differences between Nephilim and Shemayaza fascinated me. Nephilim do their best live peacefully among humans. Working with them, earning money, paying bills. Shemayaza on the other hand despised humans. The different attitudes added another layer of tension to the story.
Following Seth and Abbie from being acquainted to each other, and attracted, to a relationship was enjoyable. It was amusing to watch the banter between Abby and her brother, especially considering how they had suffered when Doug attacked Abby. In general, the love and friendship for their families and friends were a read thread in the book, and it kept their spirits up when things went dark.
The plot was fast paced, and filled with unexpect twists. I enjoyed how everything that happened raised the suspense, and helped build up to the final confrontation. I loved the mystery and suspense that crept through the novel, making it almost impossible to put down.
That said, there were one thing that I didn’t like. Abby sometimes acted like she was an extra in a horror movie. It was a bit annoying, but I loved how the author handled it.
