My brain is still in vacation mode, but I managed to round up some bargains this week. All of the books are discounted at BN, Amazon and Allromance, although the links lead to Amazon.

High Risk by Vivian Arend is discounted to 1.99 right now, at all major retailers. Even if the suspense part didn’t quite work for me, I loved the characters so I really recommend it.

Sourcebooks are discounting When You give a Duke a Diamond and Lord and Lady Spy by Shana Galen. ( It is possible that Lord and Lady Spy has already gone back to normal pricing.)

Forever and a day by Jill Shalvis is discounted to 1.99 right now. ( And Allromance finally had it, so I snapped it up..)

The books in the Ether Chronicles are discounted to 1.99 right now ( one or two was 2.99). I am thinking about getting them, but I have another Zoe Archer novel that I need to read first.

Guest Post(+Giveaway): The World of Art by Kat Martin

AgainsttheMark(300x450)The perfect murder is a work of art

In one catastrophic instant, Haley Warren’s estranged father was taken from her. She never got the chance to reconnect with him, so now she’s doing it the only way she’s got left: by proving the explosion that killed him was no accident.

When Tyler Brodie, the provocative and handsome P.I. hired by Haley, discovers that her father was investigating a suspected art theft, he knows his death is no coincidence. After all, tens of millions of dollars worth of stolen art could motivate a thief to go to any lengths-including getting rid of anyone poking around where they don’t belong.

As Haley and Ty get closer to the truth, the truth gets ugly: Did Haley’s dad know too much…or was he in on the take? And although Ty’s a consummate professional, he’s having trouble focusing on the facts of the case, and not the figure of his gorgeous client. The two are determined to get to the bottom of the case, even if it means they die trying.

The World of Art

The intriguing world of art is the setting for my newest book, AGAINST THE MARK. When private investigator Tyler Brodie agrees to help hot little blond, Haley Warren, find out the truth about her father’s death, he doesn’t realize the danger he and Haley are going to find themselves in. After all, tens of millions of dollars worth of stolen art is plenty of motive for murder.

Art is a world I know something about. In the mid-nineteen eighties, my husband and I owned a gallery called Wildfire. The gallery specialized in Western art, from impressionist landscapes, to more realistic pieces: scenes of ranch life, cattle drives, winter in the mountains or any of a dozen other western subjects.

We didn’t handle hundred million dollar Rembrandt’s but we visited dozens of galleries all over the world and got to see paintings by all sorts of different artists.

As with everything a writer experiences, the knowledge I gained was invaluable in writing AGAINST THE MARK. In the book, Ty Brodie’s investigation leads him to the discovery of the theft of millions of dollars worth of valuable art.

Was Haley’s late father involved? Or before he died, was he about to make the same discovery Ty and Haley have made–a discovery that might get them killed.

I loved writing this book. In the story, Haley is the child of a broken home, a young woman who doesn’t believe in romance, marriage, or happy endings.

But Ty is a hard man to resist. Carefree and fun-loving on the surface, Ty is ex-military, a man who knows how to handle himself in a tough situation. A man nearly irresistible to women. Ty wants Haley, and it doesn’t take long for her to realize that she wants him.

But Haley is afraid to risk her heart. It takes nearly getting killed before Haley realizes love is worth the risk.

I hope you’ll watch for AGAINST THE MARK, the ninth book in my AGAINST Series. And that next year, you’ll look for Ty’s cousins, the Brodie brothers, starting with sexy, ruggedly handsome Dylan Brodie in AGAINST THE WILD.

Tell me, who is one of your favorite artists and/or one of your favorite art museums?

Till then happy reading and have a great summer. Kat

Excerpt #1

Against the Mark, by Kat Martin

I’ve got another client for you. Tyler Brodie, I’d like you to meet my grandniece, Haley Warren. Haley’s out here from Chicago. Her grandmother was my sister.”

Just to regain a little of his dignity, Ty let his gaze roam over her, starting at the frosted-pink toenails peeking out of strappy high-heeled, open-toed sandals, sliding up a pair of long legs in snug fitting jeans, across that bare midriff with its glittering bellybutton ring over a set of nicely rounded breasts to a pretty face framed by long, softly curling honey blond hair.

She had big blue eyes, and an Angelina Jolie mouth that made him think of dirty sex. Maybe she read his thoughts for a faint blush rose in her cheeks.

Good. A little payback only seemed fair.

Besides, she was a real pleasure to look at. Not beautiful in the classic sense like some of the women he knew, but with those dimples and big blue eyes, she was way beyond cute.

Nice to meet you, Ms. Warren.”

The smile was gone and she assessed him coolly. “Aunt Ellie tells me you’re a friend, as well as an investigator.”

I like to think that’s true.”

Of course it’s true,” Ellie said. “That’s why I know we can count on Ty to help us.”

Wariness slid through him. Ellie had a way of bringing him clients who were nothing but trouble. “How’s that?”

Well, you see, three months ago Haley’s father died when his power boat exploded.”

I’m sorry for your loss,” he said to her.

Grief flashed in her eyes an instant before she glanced away. “Thank you.”

At the time everyone thought it was an accident,” Ellie continued, “a gas leak of some kind that turned deadly. Haley’s stepmother doesn’t believe it. About a month ago, Betty Jean started emailing Haley, trying to convince her to come to Los Angeles and help her find out the truth.”

Ty focused on the leggy blonde. “And you think she’s right because…?”

I don’t know if she’s right or not. I’ve never met her. Before he died, my father and I had been estranged for nearly five years, ever since he left my mother and ran off with another woman.”

Betty Jean,” he said, just to make sure he was getting this straight.

That’s right. After he moved to L.A., Dad tried to mend our relationship, but I just…I couldn’t get past his desertion.” She glanced down and her eyes misted. “Now my father’s gone.”

Ty nodded, beginning to get the picture. “So your dad’s dead and you regret not mending your fences.”

Yes, I do. Very much. But the thing is, some of the things Betty Jean says make sense. I owe it to my father to find out what really happened.”

He flicked a glance at Ellie, whose features looked a little too bland to suit him. “I take it you’re here to convince me to help her.”

That’s right. You know how good you are at these things, Tyler. Johnnie’s out of town on some case or other. And Haley will be helping you. That’ll save you from having to do everything by yourself.”

Haley would be helping him. He could think of any number of things he’d like her to do for him, but none of them had anything to do with business. The fact was Haley Warren was Ellie’s niece. Seducing her probably wasn’t a good idea.

Have you talked to the police?”

Betty Jean has,” Haley answered. “The police said there was nothing to indicate any sort of foul play. But my stepmother isn’t convinced and if she’s right–“

I’ll tell you what. I’ll look into the circumstances of the accident, see if anything looks suspicious. I’ve got friends in the department. If something’s not right, I’ll talk to them myself.”

Haley reached over and caught his arm. He felt a little zing of awareness and figured she must have felt it too since she stepped back as if she’d been burned.

She glanced away, took a deep breath and forced her eyes back to his face. “I want to be involved in this, Mr. Brodie. I need to find out for myself. I owe it to my father to find out the truth.”

ARC Review: Diamond Dust by Vivian Arend

16118795The Particulars: Paranormal Romance, Samhain Publishing, available as e-book

The Grade: B

The Source: ARC from the Author

The Blurb:

She can’t shift, but she can shake their world.

Caroline Bradley is having one hell of a week. Her wolf lover has sniffed out his mate, making her an instant free agent. Not only that, Takhini territory has been overrun with aggressive bear-shifters electing a clan leader, and the wolf pack is feeling the effects—pushing her diplomatic skills to the limit.

Tyler Harrison is a grizzly on a mission. If he’s going to win the majority of the bears’ votes, he needs one final thing: a female companion. The only woman in town with influence over wolves, humans, and more bears than he’d like to admit, is Caroline.

Despite the sexual pull between them, though, Tyler’s not seeking a permanent relationship. And Caroline isn’t looking to be anyone else’s political pawn. But she should have remembered that when shifters are involved, changes happen in the blink of an eye.

Warning: Billionaire bear hero plus kick-ass human heroine equals a sexually volatile power struggle. Get ready for what might be the naughtiest game of tag that’s ever been played in the great outdoors.

The Review:

I love Vivian Arend’s Takhini Wolves novels, and I am really glad that I requested this ARC.

It was interesting to revisit Whitehorse, and see how the Takhini pack prepared for the Bears Convent. It was interesting to get to know the Bears, and see how they handled the politics.

This was Tyler and Caroline’s story, and I really enjoyed it. I loved the fact that bears doesn’t have insta-mates like the wolves does, and that have resulted in a tradition of arranged marriages. It was interesting to watch Caroline deal with the bears and their traditions. She is used to manipulating shifters, and got a spine. She needed it to deal with Tyler. Tyler was a bit arrogant, at times bordering on jerk. But he was also tender and protective toward Caroline.

It wasn’t a smooth romance. I loved to see how their world met and clashed in the beginning. Caroline is independent and used to deciding her own life. Tyler is used to giving orders. But I felt that they was a good match, and that they can bring change to the Bear society.

I really liked the other subplot that followed  the beginning of Evan’s romance with his mate. I think I know who his mate is, but I am not telling.

I had a bit trouble feeling that the romance built towards a HEA. Paradoxically, the source of that was  the interlude in the beginning was their wedding. Which removed a bit part of the feeling that they were building toward their HEA.

Hidden Gems: The Elantra Chronicles by Michelle Sagara

I love the Elantra Chronicles by Michelle Sagara.   The world have a unique feel, The characters are intriguing, and the books are well plotted. I have 2 books left before I am caught up. Since the series is at eight books, I am highlighting the first two books.  But believe me, you want to read them all.

Friday Bargains: Mostly from autobuy authors

It is my birthday this week, and several of my favorite authors are discounting books that I loved when I read them.

It is no secret that I love Kit Rocha.  Their books are naughty, and the world is intresting.  And.. right now Beyond Shameis discounted to 0.99 right now.  ( I know, it was free re

The Kit Colbana novels by J. C. Daniels is one of my favorite Urban Fantasy series.  It is… dark.   And right now the first book Blade Song is discounted to 1.99 for the rest of the month.

Carina Press has discounted a lot of titles and one of them is Dark and disorderly by Bernita Harris.  I loved it when I read it, and it is well worth the 2.99 price.  I am crossing fingers that the discount is a sign that Bernita Harris has an upcoming new release.

And Amazon’s print book sale is continuing, I read on Facebook that After the Storm by  Maya Banks is discounted to 4.99 ( It might be 4.79). My recommendation is that you compile a wishlist and check Amazon for the prices.  Since it is unlikely that they will get any cheaper.

Review: Second Star by Dana Stabenow

The Particulars:  Science Fiction,  Gere Donovan Press, available as e-book and in print

The Source: Free read from the author’s webpage

The Grade: C+

The Blurb:

Esther “Star” Svensdotter’s job is overseeing the completion of the American Alliance’s first O’Neill cylinder — a massive space hab capable of supporting thousands of colonists. It’s just weeks away from commissioning, and she’ll be damned if Luddite terrorists, squabbling bureaucrats, military takeovers or rogue AIs will stand in the way. Frontier justice on Ellfive sometimes involves an airlock — you don’t want to be on the wrong side of justice. Or the wrong side of Star Svensdotter.

The review:

I downloaded this from the author’s webpage when she offered it as a free read a couple of years ago. ( I think she still does, in fact.) For a number of reasons, it took me a long time to get around to reading it. Until recently when I was in the mood for Science Fiction, and decided to read this.

Over all, I liked it even if I didn’t love it.

Star, the main character, was pragmatic but she wasn’t ruthless. She ruled Ellfive with a firm hand, and the descisions she made was based on the good for the space station. It was intresting to see her interact with her department heads, and the friendship that was between them.

One aspect that I really liked was that they were working towards commissioning Ellfive, and that it meant that they would soon be out of jobs. I never see that aspect being explored in other genres.

The world that novel the place in felt believable. When I read about the life at Ellfive, it almost felt like I was there. I was visiting the man made gardens, I walked down the hallways. I really liked that it wasn’t peaceful. There were both tension between Earth and Ellfive, and jealousy from other space stations.

I really liked how that tension was woven into a twisty plot that gradually pulls the reader in. I liked how when things seemed to finally go well for Star, the stakes twisted and increased. But in the end, the plot twists wrapped up all the treads, and Star’s life had changed drastically.

All in all, it was a well written novel, and an intriguing start to a new series, but I didn’t fell in love with it. So the grade is C+.

Kappahl is launching an lingerie collection inspired by 50 Shades

Normally I don’t post about clothes, but I just read about this in on Expressen’s webpage, and it boggled my mind a bit.
To sum it up: Kappahl, a Scandinavian clothing chain just announced that they are launching a lingerie collection inspired by the 50 shades trilogy. The details are scant, but I expect they will reveal more closer to the launch in November.

I’ll admit that I am a bit surprised. Oh, not that it happened, since it is a part of the trend that clothing stores are collaborating with designers and celebrities. But this is a first, there haven’t been anything based on a bestselling Erotic romance novel before. ( At least not that I am aware of.) On the other hand, 50 Shades are a phenomena and it isn’t surprising that Kappahl wants a piece of the cake.   But I am still scratching my head.  Why of all the chains, why did they agreed to let Kappahl do it?   It would have made much more sense if a bigger brand had done it. I mean, Kappahl is well-known in Sweden and the other Scandinavian countries but it isn’t a  big European chain, and it doesn’t have a US presence. But maybe the bigger chains doesn’t need to do something like this.

Still, reading about this made me wonder if this is the start of another trend.  After all, Sylvia Day’s Crossfire series have also been very successful. Maybe we will see something similar based on that series.  ( Even if I honestly don’t think so.)

What do you think?
