Some good things

So I woke up to the news that Helsinki won the 2017 Worldcon bid (It hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, but they had over 50 % of the votes). Woot! I will be definitely be attending.

The collection and the novella has titles that I love and that fit them really well. I am going to sit on them until I am done with the edits.

I posted a snippet from an idea that is bouncing around in my head on twitter earlier today. It is set in Rhoswyr, just like Frosthold is. And no, I have no idea when it will be written.  My writing schedule is pretty full, and I am also prioritizing the Portal Universe books.

“There are something bad coming.”

The dryad paused and looked down at small grass spirit. “Bad how?”

The spirit shrugged. “All I know is that it makes my roots crawl.”

The dryad sighed.

My reaction to That Book

So. Awhile ago, the news broke that a romance between a Nazi and a female jewish prisoner  had finaled in the RITAs. I hadn’t planned on writing anything, but then yesterday Bethany House posted a non apology.  And well, I changed my mind.

I don’t speak about my family history online, but this time I will.

While I am not Jewish, my father is, as is my aunt, uncle and several of my cousins and most of my extended family on my father’s side.None of them is practising. But my father is, even if no one in his family is a practising jews.

My great-grandfather and his siblings brought their family to Sweden from Poland before World War I, when the pogroms were common. They were choosing between Sweden and the US, but they settled on Sweden since it was close and they had already visited once.  (If you want to get a hint of how bad things would come, I recommend The Crime and the Silence by Anna Bikont. I haven’t gathered the courage to read it, yet.)

I have lost count how many times I have heard about how my grandmother had a bag packed during the war, in case she had to flee when the nazis invaded Sweden.  Yes, it is humbling to hear those stories when you are a teenager.

On the other hand, I also grew up with my non-jewish mother’s hatred for Poles, since they had managed drive away all their jews. Yet, I was taken by surprise when I idly mentioned to Father that I was considering going to Riga for my birthday. He patiently explained that Riga had been emptied by jews, and he would prefer to not go there. Which is one reason why my family doesn’t go to Eastern Europe. We go to Western Europe, and Southern Europe but not Europe. There are simply too many places were there used to a flourishing Jewish population, but they were either driven off or departed.

And this is almost 70 years after the war ended. I don’t know how it is in other European countries, but in Sweden the war is remembered. I was ten or twelve when I first read Anne Frank. I also saw it as a play. Other classes go to Auschwitz, though I never did. The takeaway is that it will be remembered for a long time, since Europe wants to avoid another war like it.

Birthday gifts ramblings

It is my birthday soon. And I am being asked by my family what gifts I want to have. And I don’t know.  Mostly because what I want are things that my family cannot give to me. I want my contract to be renewed, my books to sell, the draft to be done, the new Laura Anne Gilman book ( out in Nov), the new Nalini Singh book ( out in Sept).

All of them are out of my hands. I cannot control my sales, or the fact that all the books I want isn’t out yet ( and most of them seem to be out either in Nov or Sept. Argh.)

But! I do have the new Aliette de Bodard novel, which will be my reward for finishing the revision.  It is the first time I hold off reading a book until I am done with revisions. And it is really hard.  I think I will give in before I reach the end of the draft, but today is the first time in ages I have done any decent progress.

If I keep up this progress, I will done in 10 days or so. Which would be really nice.

And then I will either write The Silver Hand or type in Frosthold. It depends on my mood. Probably Frosthold. I have another idea, probably short story, featuring dryads and grass elementals that I want to write, but I need to get back into the universe first. And then there is Tarre, the sequel.

Snippet from the Cauldron Bound

I am busy editing Daughter of the Dark, but here is a short snippet from The Cauldron Bound.

Aodh stared at the grass-covered earthen wall as high as three men that was blocking the path. Why didn’t the warriors we met tell us about the wall? echoed in his mind. Maybe the warriors didn’t know about it. He considered that. Before the war there had been trade, but it had dried up, war making all the clans insular and focused on survival,  everyone assuming that the traders were acting as spies. It was possible, he decided, although judging from the yellowed grass that covered it, the wall had been here for a while.

He looked at the wall. It might be blocking the path, but there had to be a way around it. No clan, no matter how desperate, would block their only path out from the settlement.

Rethinking things

I am pondering which strategy to use for the rest of the Portal Universe series. Originally I had planned to release the books quite a bit apart ( 6 months), but now I am wondering if it would be wiser to release them closer to each other..

The reason for this, is because I want to create a momentum. And one of the most effective ways to build momentum is to release things close to each other.  Originally, I had planned to do this by releasing the short stories separately, but the short story collection will be long enough that it would make more sense to release them together after the release of Daughter of the Dark.( Exile 8 000 words, Vanished 10 k +, 2 unwritten stories, 5000-10 000 each.)

So I think 2016-2017 will look something like this:

Daughter of the Dark

Short story collection

Novella 3 ( Really needs a title. Ack!)

Bundle 1

Bundle 2

Note: This is from Spring 2016 to Fall 2017 or so. It is tighter, but not a super tight schedule.

And no. Nothing is set in stone. At the moment I have a day job, but there are no guarantees that I will have it in March 2016 ( My boss is telling me not to worry, but I will not stop worrying until I have the new contract in my hand). If I don’t have a day job, everything publishing related will be on hold until I get a new one.

I would still be writing, I just wouldn’t publish anything new. Or if I did, it wouldn’t be with the help of pro editors which is what I am doing now.  But no use in worrying in what might happen, until it happens.

The First month: The Cauldron Bound

So the Cauldron Bound have been out in almost exactly in one month. And the sales have been dismal. Part of it is because I screwed up when I signed up for Bargain Booksy without dropping the price.
But even when I dropped the price to 0.99, the sales were few. The fact that people bought Exile, with a blurb written by a pro told me that the reason for the low sales were probably the blurb.
So I tweaked it. Twice. But the sales didn’t rise. So today I gave the blurb another overhaul and tweaked the keywords too. Here’s hoping it works!

This is also one of the things I like with selfpublishing. If my books isn’t selling, I can try to figure out how to improve things. Sometimes it means tweaking the blurb and keywords. Sometimes it might mean getting a new cover designed. But for me each new release means I am building on the lessons I have learned with the previous book, instead of making the same mistakes again and again.

Writing Exercise: Keywords

I have been frustrated about my lack of sales, despite dropping the price
.So I have spent the morning tweaking my keywords.
Why? Because while cover and blurb makes a reader click on the buy button keywords tells them that your books exist.
Before I tweaked them they were something like this: military fantasy adventure, bronze age Celtic fantasy Elf.
After 20 minutes of free writing and some Amazon searches, the keywords have changed to war warrior witch quest undead curse sorcerer.
One the surface it might look more generic which is the point, but the combination makes it specific. Oh, and I haven’t listed all keywords.

Now I want *You* to take a pen and paper or open an empty document and write down 7-10 words that boils down what your book is about.
Don’t think too much about it, just write
it down.
Once you have written them it is up to you what to do with them. You can use them as a basis for an elevator pitch. If the story is selfpublished you can log in to KDP or Smashwords and enter them there. One note: If you want to get into subcategories, you have to add commas. Also while it says 7 keywords, one keyword can be made up of several words.
