Wizard of London by Mercedes Lackey

This book is set in Victorian London-where magic is real and Elemental Masters control the powers of Fire, Water, Air, and Earth. This is the fourth novel, and it tells the story of Lord Alderscroft, Master of the British Elemental Masters Council-the most powerful Fire Master ever to lead the Council. This one is a prequel to the other novels and tells Lord Aldercrofts story.

Normally, I love Mercedes Lackey’s books, especially the Elemental Masters Series, but this one… isn’t as good as the other ones.
The other ones have been fascinating, unexpected plot twist, but this one wasn’t. Why?
The feeling that I personally get is that it feel like, two shorts, and one novella with the same characters. It simply don’t feel like a novel.
There are intresting parts, but the intresting parts are things that just are mentioned briefly. Like, that a couple of the characters isn’t mages they are Talents..
What I hope is that this book is a kick off to a new series.

My advise is: Buy it when it comes out in paperback, or borrow it from the library.

The Review:

The blurb:

Rabbit is a trooper on the Border Guards, just another body in the King’s army. But when his patrol encounters a Faena-one of the magical guardians of an uneasy ally-Rabbit is thrust into a political and magical intrigue that could start a war. Because Rabbit isn’t just another trooper. He is the son of nobility-and a mage who doesn’t know his own power…

My impressions:

Lorna Freeman have created a riveting story, filled with unique characters. She is walking a narrow line, since the characters could easily have become flat. She manage to avoid it with a riveting combination of humor and secrets. The humor makes the characters real, and the secrets shows their flaws. That’s one thing I love with this book. Everyone have secrets. As the secrets are revealed, the dynamic between the characters change. Together the vivid worldbuilding, and the unexpected plot twists creates a riveting, fascinating story.

Muse by Lazette Gifford- a recommendation

In a town full of lunatics, murder is just around the corner …
Stranded when his car breaks down, Killian Dain Fox overhears a cop and a gas station clerk discussing murder and the exchange of money. Although he tries to believe he misheard the conversation, by the time K.D. meets a few more of the locals, he’s convinced the entire small town is inhabited by a gang of murderers.
Between the massive storms that threaten to flood the town, a would-be killer on the loose, and his growing attraction to the town’s pretty mayor, Killian Dain Fox is on a rollercoaster of a ride in a place he least expected it… Nebraska.
Lazette Gifford’s Muse earned its place as the first Holly Lisle’s Fiction Pick for its wonderful characterization, strong plot, and delightful setting. Smart, funny, and consistently unexpected, this story promises a lot … and it delivers.
