Nanowrimo!

The short story decided it wanted to be a novella, if not longer, so I am pondering NaNoWriMo to challenge myself. And hush, I know it would be cheating, but I really need a deadline, and I also need to know if I can finish a book in a month, while working.  I know I can do it when *not* working, but well, this is going to be more of a challenge. Heh.

Part of this is fuelled by the fact that I am writing a proper outline, which is going to be at least 1000 words long, if not longer.  There are also the fact that my brain thinks I should add another POV character, and that I am maybe starting in the wrong place. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t *have* to start it in another place, it has more to with showing or telling the backstory ( right now I am telling it) .  But I will probably stick to one POV for the first draft, and add more POVs later.  Which is what I did with the Cauldron Bound. I wrote the first draft mostly in Aodh’s POV, and then added Moirin’s during the revision.

Anyway. The outline means I will be able to write faster, since I know more or less what is happening. Though I am not going to be able to write at a Nano speed, I know myself. I am not even going to try.  Though it could be fun to do it for a weekend or two.

Anyway. I am mikaela_lind at the Nano webpage.  Though I might add that I tend to be not so active, but I will make a try!

Sunday dreaming

It is 9 am here, and I am dreaming about sitting in sunshine somewere warm and write. This is an occurring dream, that appear when the weather is grey and/or I haven’t had time to write for awhile.  Right now it is mostly because of the latter,  though it is raining a bit.
One day I will have the time to actually travel somewere warm in late Oct/early Nov.  Though there is that work related deadline. So I don’t think it would be appreciated if I went to Spain. 🙂

Anyway. What dreams do you have?

Autumn musings

So I took a walk this afternoon and snapped some photos. They made me think about how blessed I am to grow up surrounded by nature and history. I walked past an wayfarer inn from the 1600s, I walked past an old farm, and if I had continued I would have walked past another one. This made me think about how growing up surrounded by history and oaks. Because there are lots of old oaks like this one around here.

Speaking of old. There have been living people here since the iron ages. If not longer, it has been a long time since I visited the iron age graves. During the iron age, this was a part of the Baltic sea. It is still really big, at least 20 km, if not longer.

If I was happy yesterday, I am sad today

This morning a masked man, armed with daggers walked into a school in Trollhättan,  a midsized Swedish town, and killed  1 and injured 4.
I am in shock. In fact, whole of Sweden is in shock. Things like that doesn’t happen here.  In fact, it shouldn’t happen anywhere.
So I am sad today. And I will probably be for days. But it will pass.
I doubt I will write anything this weekend, though.
Anyway, stay safe everyone.

I am simply happy

It is late October, the weather is either cold and sunny or rainy. But I am happy. I am caught up enough at work that I will reached the deadline with ease. I have finished my book, paid my editor, which means that everything is set to send the book to her in a month.
Meanwhile I am having fun writing a couple of interconnected short stories. I know what Love and Toke is meeting but I haven’t written it down yet. I probably should.
This is a story that I am writing purely for fun. It has dryads and wolves and hidden treasure. I am having a lot of fun exploring the what ifs. I guess I am writing an outlining draft?

Swedish History: Birger Jarl

Born in either 1208 or 1210 ( the details are a bit hazy) Birger Jarl was the youngest son of Ingrid Ylva and Magnus Minnesköld. And if you look at his family history, it wasn’t surprising that he became jarl. Two of his uncles and one of his cousins were Jarls before him, and that is the ones that I am aware of. It is possible that there were other Jarls from his family during the early 1100’s. In Sweden, Jarls were appointed by the king. They were essentially second to the king when it came to power.

Birger Jarl didn’t hesitate to use his influence. Maybe it was because he had grown up in a time when Sweden was basically in civil war, but he was determined to stop the warring. He succeeded, at least while he was still alive.

The first mention of him as an adult was 1237, when he joined the circle of king Erik’s advisors. He spent the next decade, working for the king, getting contacts with the church and in the other Scandinavian kingdoms. He also married the king’s sister. During the following decade, the tension grew among the other nobles, who didn’t like the way Birger Jarl was gaining in power.

It all came to a head when the former king’s son decided to rebel in 1247. After that followed 4 years of skirmishes. Birger Jarl was appointed jarl by the king in 1248 after the old jarl died under mysterious circumstances.

The king himself died 1250, and after him his nephew Valdemar, Birger’s son, was elected king. It isn’t certain what Birger felt over the fact that his son was elected king.

The rebellion was squashed in 1251, and the next 15 years was peaceful. Once the peace was secured, Birger Jarl focused on the relationship with the church and the other Scandinavian kingdoms. He arranged marriages between his children and the children of the kings of Norway and Denmark, he negiotated trade treaties with German cities. He also founded cities, among them Stockholm.

But what Birger Jarl is remembered most for is the laws. It was during his reign, that a lot of the laws were written down. Among them was the law that allowed daughters to inherit ( I think they inherited half of their brothers share), but more important was the edsöre laws, which meant that the nobles swore to the king to upheld his peace, and then they did that. Among them were the peace laws, that forbid the following ( among other things, there was a lot of peace laws!):

* to kill or maim in church, churchyard or at ting ( =judical gathering)

*to assault and rape a woman ( and to kidnap her to force her to marry you)

* to maim or kill someone in his own house or the house of another man.

* Act to get revenge after peace have been made

* to dismember someone

All of these laws are very impressive, considering how early they were formulated. From what The peace laws were punished by death or fines, or biltog ( with is a kind of shunning, You couldn’t inherit ot own land etc).  In fact, they remained the law for almost 500 years, before they were changed.

Birger Jarl died as an old man, and I am sure that he at least on some level was content with the stability he had created. He attempted to make sure that the stability lasted, by giving his other sons dukedoms. Which worked. For awhile. But more on the later, since this blogpost is quite long already.

Done, done, done!

I began revising Daughter of the Dark during my vacation in July. And I finally reached the end. With one day to spare of my slightly extended deadline. It took much longer than I thought it would, but life got in between after my birthday in August ( not knowing if you have a job at Sept 1st will do that!) and then I was gone a lot in September.

But it is finally done. At the moment, it is slightly over 47 000 words long. No doubt it will  be a bit longer after my editor, the eminent Laura Anne Gilman, has read it, and pointed out all the missing stuff. Because I know there will be missing stuffs, but for now, it is done.

Ok. Now I am going to do all the things I haven’t gotten around to. Like cleaning the apartment.

So that was Octocon

I am back from a lovely weekend in Dublin. I had a great time, wandering the city with my mum, doing touristy things most of Thursday and Friday.

Then at Friday night, I picked up my badge to Octocon and headed off to see my friends and attend panels. I had a blast.  i mean, it began with Catie squeeing and giving me fudge.  After that, it continued in the same way. I attended panels, with discussions and laughter. In between I got to know more people and discuss all the things with them and my friends.

Also, I attended the Timetravellers Ball, and I had so much fun. I am a bit sad that I didn’t have my phone, since there was so many awesome costumes.

I made sure to eat dinner with mum everyday, and all the restaurants we visited was located along Camden Street.  Most of the restaurants had been recommended on Twitter or in the program.  The food was very tasty. Even if the portions was really big in some cases.

I am definitely looking forward to next year.  Though I am also going to Eurocon which is 3 weeks later, and maybe something else so it will be a hectic autumn for me next year. 🙂

Octocon!

I am leaving for Dublin tomorrow. First a couple of days of touristing with mum, then I get to see all the people. And meet new people. It will be fun.
Unlike Shamrokon, I am  doing no promotion at all at the con.
However I am running a sale to celebrate Octocon. The Cauldron Bound is 0.99 at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Cauldron-Bound-Portal-Universe-Novella-ebook/dp/B010MOYWNO
